We are all important and special, and it’s so much fun to be different! Imagine if we were all the same, like if all elephants were only gray. It would be boring! That’s why diversity is like Elmer the elephant, who has many bright colors: red, blue, green, and yellow. When we celebrate our differences, we learn new things from each other and can be friends with EVERYONE, no matter if they are like us or not. Being different is a super quality!
As our first activity, we read the book Elmer, which is about an elephant who isn’t gray, but many colors! He was sad because he was different, so he covered himself in gray mud to look like the others. When he returned to his herd, they were serious. When the rain washed away the mud and his colors reappeared, everyone laughed and rejoiced. Elmer learned that being different is fun and special, and from that day on, the elephants celebrate their uniqueness.
Later in our Morning Circle, we sat down to talk about what each of the kids had understood from the book. The students made their own Elmer, using paint and pom-poms with clothespins to paint.
We concluded our circle with these comments.
“Some of us have straight hair, others have curly hair.” Itsamara

“All these differences—in how we look, what we like, or how we celebrate—make our classroom a more interesting and happy place.”

La magia de ser diferentes como Elmer
Todos somos importantes y especiales, y ¡es muy divertido que seamos diferentes! Imagina que todos fuéramos iguales, como si todos los elefantes fueran solo de color gris. ¡Sería un poco aburrido!
Por eso, la diversidad es como el elefante Elmer, que tiene muchos colores brillantes: rojo, azul, verde y amarillo.
Cuando celebramos nuestras diferencias, aprendemos cosas nuevas unos de otros y podemos ser amigos de TODOS, sin importar si son como nosotros o no. ¡Ser diferente es una súper cualidad!
Como primera actividad leímos el libro de Elmer, el cual trata de un elefante que no es gris, ¡sino de muchos colores! Él estaba triste por ser diferente, así que se cubrió de barro gris para parecerse a los demás. Al volver con su manada, estaban muy serios. Cuando la lluvia lavó el barro y sus colores reaparecieron, todos se rieron y se alegraron. Elmer aprendió que ser diferente es divertido y especial, y desde ese día, los elefantes celebran el que sea único y diferente.
Posteriormente, en nuestro Morning Circle nos sentamos para conversar de lo que cada uno de los pequeños había entendido del libro. Para finalizar nuestra actividad, los alumnos hicieron su Elmer, con pintura y pompones, pinzas fueron lo que utilizaron para pintar.
Concluimos nuestro círculo con estos comentarios:
