As part of our atelier project about matter, we prepared an activity that created a lot of wonder and excitement among our third graders. Students concocted a mix and changed the state of matter from liquid to solid not by putting the water in a freezer, but by lowering the temperature and centrifuging a liquid to create a really tasty ice cream.
To prepare the mix, students worked in teams to cut some fruits, squish them and mix them with water and sugar as well as with a secret ingredient (egg yolk). After having the mix ready, they poured the liquid into big metal pots that were dipped in a small tub filled with ice and salt and began taking turns to quickly turn the pot in one direction and the other to centrifugate the mix making it change states and “fluff up”. After relentlessly turning for some minutes, the mix began looking more like ice and less like water.
Besides experimenting with changes in matter, students were also very conscious and careful regarding sanitation since they washed their hands thoroughly before handling any of the ingredients, they put up their hair, and they tried not to speak whenever we opened the pot to check the status of our mix so as not to contaminate the ice cream along the process of preparing it. This activity both presented a fun and interesting way to learn and a nice time to relax and bond.

Como parte de nuestro proyecto de Atelier sobre la materia, preparamos una actividad que generó mucha curiosidad y entusiasmo entre nuestros estudiantes de tercer grado. Los alumnos crearon una mezcla y cambiaron el estado de la materia de líquido a sólido, no poniendo el agua en un congelador, sino bajando la temperatura y centrifugando un líquido para crear un helado realmente delicioso.
Para preparar la mezcla, los estudiantes trabajaron en equipos para cortar frutas, machacarlas y mezclarlas con agua y azúcar, así como con un ingrediente secreto (yema de huevo). Después de tener la mezcla lista, vertieron el líquido en grandes ollas de metal que se sumergieron en una pequeña tina llena de hielo y sal, y comenzaron a turnarse para girar rápidamente la olla en una dirección y luego en la otra, centrifugando así la mezcla para lograr que cambiara de estado y “esponjara”. Después de girar incansablemente durante varios minutos, la mezcla comenzó a parecer más al hielo y menos al agua.
Además de experimentar con los cambios de la materia, los estudiantes también fueron muy conscientes y cuidadosos con respecto a la higiene, ya que se lavaron bien las manos antes de manipular los ingredientes, se recogieron el cabello y trataron de no hablar cada vez que abríamos la olla para revisar el estado de nuestra mezcla de manera que no contaminaran el helado. Esta actividad no solo ofreció una forma divertida e interesante de aprender, sino también un momento agradable para relajarse y convivir.
