Parents often wonder why their little ones seem to misplace things so easily. At this age, children are still developing important skills like attention, memory, and organization. Their brains are busy learning how to follow routines, manage emotions, and interact with others. With so much going on, it’s easy for a child to forget where they left their sweater or to walk away from their water bottle during playtime.

Additionally, many kindergartners are just beginning to take responsibility for their belongings. They may not fully understand the importance of keeping track of their items or may struggle to recognize which things belong to them—especially if they look similar to a classmate’s.

Starting a new school year is a fascinating time for kids and their families, and it can be just as challenging. Getting used to a new environment, classroom, teacher, and even friends is an important and brave step for a child – and it should be treated as such. The adaptation weeks are to help our kids feel comfortable and safe in a new environment and be aware of their surroundings, including personal belongings. Teachers and all school staff are also living these adaptation weeks with their students. They are getting to know each one of the kids: their personalities, likes and dislikes, tastes, parents, and even their personal belongings.

As frustrating as it can be, losing belongings is a common occurrence in early learning. With patience, gentle reminders, and a little help from teachers and parents, children will gradually build the independence and responsibility needed to keep track of their things.

Labeling items clearly and encouraging simple routines like checking their cubby or backpack at home and school can go a long way in helping children become more organized. In time, these small habits will become big skills that serve them throughout their school years.

If your child left a belonging at school or is missing, please be patient; we will find it. Please email your kid’s teacher and me about the missing belongings. Or to Miss Bere Ángeles if your kids left it in an AfterSchool activity. What helps a lot is to have all your kids’ belongings labeled (backpack, lunch bag, pencil case, tupperware, cutlery, clothes). Looking for a “blue tupper” without being labeled is difficult for us to find.
