After Villa High\u2019s successful Sustainability Fair on April 9, second-grade-students from the Visual Arts workshop continued celebrating Earth Day through art. Prehispanic sites and different art expressions from different prehispanic people from ancient Mexico are part of this grade\u2019s program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So teacher Robert Borges focused on the simple, but beautiful art forms called \u201cglyphs\u201d especially from the Mexica and Mayan people. Teacher Robert explained to his students that artists used these forms to communicate. He chose a X\u00f3chitl<\/em> (flower in Nahuatl) and an Ocelotl <\/em>(jaguar) to represent the flora and fauna of Mexico and to celebrate Earth Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students drew these glyphs on a thick paper called \u201cMina Gris\u201d which is recycled and can be used for painting with watercolors. Students traced their drawing with a permanent marker and added color using watercolors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n
